ESHIA Study for 2 Solar PV Power Plants & Transmission Lines in Mombasa and Athi River

Momnai Energy Ltd. intended to develop two projects at Bamburi, Mombasa County, and Athi, Kajiado County. Bamburi Cement PLC would provide land on a sub-lease basis for the project for 25 years at its production site in Mombasa. Bamburi has a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Momnai Energy Ltd.

The Projects were:

1. 14.5MWac Solar PV Power Plant and Approx. 3km long 33 kV Transmission Line (The Project) at Bamburi, Mombasa County.
2. 5MWac Solar PV Power Plant and Approx. 1.7 km 6.6 kV Transmission Line (The Project) at Athi River, Machakos County

The main objective of the ESHIA Studies was:

• Identify the Environmental, Social and Health Impacts of the proposed project.
• Recommend appropriate and cost-effective mitigation measures to address project impacts during construction and operation.
• Generate baseline data for monitoring and evaluation of how well the mitigation measures will be implemented during the project cycle.
• Evaluate and identify viable project alternatives.
• Prepare an Environmental, Social and Health Impact Assessment Study Report compliant with the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (1999) including the subsequent NEMA Regulations, TFC Performance Standards, World Bank Group EHS Guidelines, EIB Environmental and Social Standards and the ILO Conventions detailing Project Impacts, Project Alternatives, Proposed Mitigation Measures, Environment Management and Monitoring Plans and Decommissioning.

The successful completion of the two ESHIA studies, which included ecological assessments, enabled the implementation and commissioning of both projects.
