Project Description
The Electricity Expansion Project is targeted to contribute to enhancing access to electricity and expanding and strengthening the electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure. The Project will strengthen social inclusion through the adoption of priority loads for energizing key institutional facilities such as night-time services for schools and health centres, and provision of energy for pump irrigation and water supplies, The 132kV transmission line from Kindaruma through Mwingi to Garissa, will expand grid electrification to a disadvantaged region in the Northern Province, and by replacing diesel generation in Garissa (2.4 MW), make energy more affordable and reliable. The multiplier effects of electricity expansion in Western and Nyanza Provinces are likely to spur growth in the production of commercial wheat, maize, tea, sugar, dairy farming, and small businesses.
The objective of the project is to increase the capacity, efficiency, and quality of electricity supply as well as to expand access to electricity in urban, peri-urban, and rural areas.
The project components included:
- Construction of 328km of single circuit 132kV TLs covering Eldoret-Kitale, Kisii-Awendo and Kindaruma-Mwingi- Garissa;
- Construction of 132/33kV New Substations at Kitale (1x23MVA), Awendo (1x23MVA), Mwingi (1×7.5MVA), and Garissa (1×7.5MVA)
- Construction of additional bays to accommodate the new TL at the existing 132kv Substations at Eldoret, Kisii, and Kidaruma.
The Consultancy services included the design review, preparation of bidding documents, assistance during
procurement, construction supervision, and commissioning for all project components grouped into three (3) contracts. In addition, the consulting services were also required to assist the Client in the implementation of ESMPs and RAPs.
