Project Description

The Promotion of Climate-Friendly Cooking: Kenya (GCF/EnDev) project consists of technical assistance, limited investments to scale up the current production of Improved Cook Stoves (ICS) in Kenya, product quality assurance, marketing support activities, awareness creation to augment the adoption of ICS by households reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from domestic cooking, a very important contributor to GHG emissions. The project also intends to generate knowledge that can be used to replicate these results in other countries where cooking is a major contributor to GHG emissions.

The objective of the study was to assist the technical team in implementing ESMP capacity building for entrepreneurs, especially under the professionalisation of ICS activities for the GCF promotion of the climate-friendly cooking Kenya project. This was to be achieved through the development of an ESMP training manual and the rolling out of ToTs for a selected number of project staff.

The specific objectives of the assignment were to: –

  • Organise a meeting with the technical team as a preparatory phase, which was preceded by the development of its methodology.
  • Conduct a rapid assessment to identify the likely negative social and environmental impacts of the key project activities and actors (ICS producers, suppliers of pottery sand and clay) and recommend the type of relevant training to each group to ensure compliance with local, national regulations and international standards.
  • Undertake literature review and complete drafting of the ESMP training manual based on internationally acceptable standards and best practices for such similar work.
  • Ensure that all the relevant aspects of ESMP capacity building are captured, and the document is drafted in an easy-to-read and understandable format, as well as ensuring logical flow and consistency of the content.
  • Prepare training modules for the assignment tailored to the specific ICS business categories. (Ceramic liner producers, Blacksmiths, and raw material suppliers)
  • Facilitate a training workshop attended by selected ToTs on different aspects of ESMP (Assessment and Management of Risks and Environmental Impacts, labour force and working conditions, resource efficiency and pollution prevention, community health and safety, land acquisition, conservation of biodiversity and sustainable management of living natural resources and cultural heritage).
  • Support for Sensitisation (Development and rolling out of plans by ToTs and Cluster Coordinators).

Rapid Assessment and ESMP Review Final Reports were developed, and at least thirty-eight (38) trainers were equipped through training.
